Mammography

Mammography

A mammogram is an x-ray image of the breast. This procedure is used to identify abnormalities in the breast tissues. Mammography is widely accepted as the most effective method of detecting breast cancer. Mammography uses a small amount of radiation to produce images of the breast tissue.

Patients will be asked to fill out a breast history questionnaire and will be asked to remove clothing from the waist up. Patients are given a gown to wear during the exam.

This procedure requires the breast tissue to be compressed. This process is necessary to provide quality diagnostic images. The compression of the breast tissue may be mildly uncomfortable. Occasionally, additional views may be required to demonstrate the tissues of the breast. This is a common occurrence and should not be of concern to the patient. After the images are produced, they are interpreted by a Radiologist with specific training in mammography. A report will be sent to your physician. If the results of the exam should indicate an abnormality do not panic! The overwhelming majority of cases turn out to be benign abnormalities.

The Mammography Department of Gonzales Healthcare Systems is accredited by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and by the American College of Radiology. This means that the department has met the stringent requirements for the provision of this service.

Patients should not wear deodorant, perfume, or body powders prior to having the exam. If you have had a previous mammogram at another facility, please make sure that these films are forwarded to our department. This is necessary for comparative purposes.
