Computerized Axial Tomography

Computerized Axial Tomography is a radiologic modality that combines the use of ionizing radiation with a sophisticated computer to produce detailed cross-sectional images or “slices.” These images are very informative about soft tissue structures, organs, and bones. There is a small amount of radiation used with CT, but the benefits of this test far outweigh any risk.

Frequently, patients may be asked to alter their diet or drink a special contrast fluid that enhances the images. It is important to follow the instructions carefully in order to obtain optimum images. If there is any possibility you may be pregnant, be sure to inform you technologist prior to having your CT examination. Patients may be asked to remove their clothing and wear a hospital gown. You may also be given an IV contrast injection to further enhance the CT images. You will be asked to lie on a table that travels through the equipment. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly during the test. CT images will be interpreted by a Radiologist, and a report will be sent to your physician.
