After years of dealing with a bad knee, Wendy Allen finally reached a breaking point. “I was down for the count,” she recalled. The timing wasn’t ideal—she had just closed her small business and had started a new job—making the decision to have surgery even more daunting. “I was very nervous,” she admitted.
But from the moment she returned home, the support began almost immediately. The Memorial Hospital Home Health Agency team quickly stepped in to guide her through recovery. “Someone came really fast to get everything started,” she said. “And then Mike Mikesh showed up the very next day.”
Mike, her physical therapist, made an immediate impression. “He’s a great coach. He’s seen so much,” she said. Though the initial visit included a lot of information, the team made sure she had everything she needed. “They left me a folder, which was helpful because I wasn’t completely taking it all in at the time. I read through it the next day, and it made things much easier.”
Her recovery plan was straightforward but effective. With regular physical therapy sessions lasting about an hour and weekly nursing visits, she began to rebuild her strength step by step. Pain management also played a key role. “I had my nerves frozen two weeks before surgery, which helped a lot,” she explained. “I was on prescriptions for less than five days, and I used a lot of ice.”
What stood out most was how personalized her care felt. “Mike knew I was dedicated to getting better,” she said. “He built the plan around what I wanted and needed, adding exercises as I got stronger.” The team stayed in constant communication, checking in regularly with phone calls. “It wasn’t just appointments—they were always in touch,” she said.
Recovering at home made a significant difference. “It was so comfortable. I didn’t have to worry about getting dressed and going somewhere for therapy,” she said. “I could focus completely on healing.”
Throughout the process, she felt supported and safe. “It was 5-star professionalism,” she said. “Everyone was so helpful.” With the right equipment at home and a care team she trusted, she gained confidence quickly.
And the results? Life-changing.
“My mobility has improved tremendously,” she shared. “I can jog if I need to, and I have almost full range of motion.” Even the small victories felt meaningful. “I can wear different shoes now—not just flats, but small heels,” she said with a smile.
Some milestones meant even more. She was back to work in under six weeks—and perhaps most importantly, she was able to dance at her daughter’s wedding.
Looking back, she’s surprised by just how far she’s come. “I realized how lucky I was,” she said. “I had a purpose, I was driven, and I made it happen.”
The hardest part of recovery wasn’t the pain—it was the temporary loss of independence. “I’m not used to being restricted,” she said. But her care team understood the balance. “They didn’t push too hard. They knew what needed to happen right away and what could wait.”
When asked what she would tell others considering surgery and rehab at home, her answer was simple: “Just do it. It’s so convenient to have this kind of care right here in our town.”
She credits much of her success to the people who supported her along the way. “Mike Mikesh and Haley Grantland were incredible. They were both so encouraging.”
Today, her life looks completely different. “I’m walking with no pain,” she said. “I can’t believe I waited so long to have the surgery.”
More than anything, she’s grateful. “I’m so happy I was able to get this level of care here in Gonzales,” she said. “I had complete confidence in my doctor, nurses, and the home health team. Being mobile again has improved my overall health—I truly feel back to normal.”
